Family:Cichlids (Cichlidae)

Other scientific names: Amphilophus calobrense, Amphilophus calobrensis, Cichlasoma calobrense

The Red-spotted Cichlid, also known by its scientific name Darienheros calobrensis, belongs to the family Cichlidae. It's interesting to note that in the past, this species was classified under a different genus and was then called Amphilophus calobrensis. Like many Central American cichlids, it exhibits aggressive behavior, which makes it undesirable to keep more than one adult in a home aquarium. It is also recommended to avoid introducing other fish species. Otherwise, this cichlid does not require special care, being undemanding and highly resilient.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Red-spotted Cichlid get?

An adult reaches 20–25 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Red-spotted Cichlid need?

The recommended volume is 250 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Red-spotted Cichlid need?

Temperature 22–27 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, hardness 3–15 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Red-spotted Cichlid live?

Around 10 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Red-spotted Cichlid aggressive?

Temperament: aggressive / incompatible / unfriendly. Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Red-spotted Cichlid should be kept together?

Recommended setup: solitary. Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Red-spotted Cichlid eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Red-spotted Cichlid?

The scientific name of the species is Darienheros calobrensis, family Cichlids (Cichlidae). It also appears in the literature as: Amphilophus calobrense, Amphilophus calobrensis, Cichlasoma calobrense.
