The scientific name Betta edithae, or Betta Edith, or Edith's Fighting Fish, indicates its belonging to the Osphronemidae family. This fish was named in honor of the researcher Edith Korthaus, a naturalist who participated in the discovery of many fish species on the island of Borneo. Despite its unpretentiousness, this species can pose challenges for novice aquarists, as its successful keeping requires maintaining low pH and dGH values.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Betta Edith get?

An adult reaches 5–6 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Betta Edith need?

The recommended volume is 70 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Betta Edith need?

Temperature 20–27 °C, pH 5–7, hardness 1–5 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Betta Edith live?

Around 3 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Betta Edith aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Betta Edith should be kept together?

Recommended setup: mixed (solitary / pair / group). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Betta Edith eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Betta Edith?

The scientific name of the species is Betta edithae, family Osphronemidae.
