Family:Nothobranchiidae

Other scientific names: Fundulopanchax deltaense

Belonging to the family Nothobranchiidae, the Delta Killifish, scientifically known as Fundulopanchax deltaensis, is a truly amazing fish. Its original and vibrant coloration is not often found in natural waters. However, this species has one key feature that makes it not the most suitable choice for most aquarists: the fish's lifespan is extremely short. In home aquariums, it is only about 1 year, and only in exceptional cases can it reach 2 years.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Delta Killifish get?

An adult reaches 10 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Delta Killifish need?

The recommended volume is 80 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Delta Killifish need?

Temperature 24–29 °C, pH 6.5–8.2, hardness 2–19 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Delta Killifish live?

Around 3 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Delta Killifish aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Delta Killifish should be kept together?

Recommended setup: pair (male/female). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Delta Killifish eat?

Diet type: meat / protein (live, frozen, fresh). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Delta Killifish?

The scientific name of the species is Fundulopanchax deltaensis, family Nothobranchiidae. It also appears in the literature as: Fundulopanchax deltaense.
