Family:Rainbowfishes (Melanotaeniidae)

The fish, scientifically known as Glossolepis dorityi, or Dority's Rainbowfish, is a member of the family Melanotaeniidae. This species was first discovered by the renowned German researcher Heiko Bleher in 1999, but he was unable to collect the samples needed for detailed study at that time. A fortunate opportunity arose for other researchers in April 2000: it was then that Dan Dority and David Price collected Glossolepis dorityi, which allowed it to be entered into the international fish catalog as a completely new species.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Dority's Rainbowfish get?

An adult reaches 11 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Dority's Rainbowfish need?

The recommended volume is 150 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Dority's Rainbowfish need?

Temperature 26–30 °C, pH 5–8, hardness 5–20 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Dority's Rainbowfish live?

Around 7 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Dority's Rainbowfish aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Dority's Rainbowfish should be kept together?

Recommended setup: medium group (6–8 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Dority's Rainbowfish eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Dority's Rainbowfish?

The scientific name of the species is Glossolepis dorityi, family Rainbowfishes (Melanotaeniidae).
