The Wakin is one of the oldest artificially bred forms of Goldfish. The development of this variety occurred in China between the second and fourth centuries AD, and for many centuries, it remained unchanged. Intensive selective breeding of the Wakin began with its appearance in Japan in 1502. These efforts led to the emergence of many currently known species. Consequently, the Wakin can rightfully be considered the origin that gave rise to all other varieties of Goldfish.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Wakin get?

An adult reaches 20–30 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Wakin need?

The recommended volume is 230 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Wakin need?

Temperature 18–22 °C, pH 6–8, hardness 5–19 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Wakin live?

Around 15 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Wakin aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (dangerous to smaller ones). Not a predatory species, but small fish that fit in its mouth will eventually be eaten.

How many Wakin should be kept together?

Recommended setup: small group (3–4 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Wakin eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Wakin?

The scientific name of the species is Carassius auratus, family Cyprinids (Cyprinidae). It also appears in the literature as: Carasius auratus, Carassius buergeri, Carassius burgeri.
