Family:Cichlids (Cichlidae)

Pterophyllum altum, known as the Altum Angelfish or High-bodied Angelfish, belongs to the Cichlidae family. This species is the largest among angelfish, reaching lengths of 18 cm or more. Despite their size, these fish exhibit a relatively peaceful temperament, especially when young, which allows for their keeping with smaller species. However, because the Altum Angelfish has high demands for living conditions and water quality, it is not recommended for beginner aquarists.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Altum Angelfish get?

An adult reaches 20 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Altum Angelfish need?

The recommended volume is 200 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Altum Angelfish need?

Temperature 25–29 °C, pH 4.8–6.2, hardness 1–5 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Altum Angelfish live?

Around 15 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Altum Angelfish aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (dangerous to smaller ones). Not a predatory species, but small fish that fit in its mouth will eventually be eaten.

How many Altum Angelfish should be kept together?

Recommended setup: schooling (usually from 5–6 individuals and more). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Altum Angelfish eat?

Diet type: meat / protein (live, frozen, fresh). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Altum Angelfish?

The scientific name of the species is Pterophyllum altum, family Cichlids (Cichlidae).
