The Asoka Barb, known in scientific literature as Systomus asoka, belongs to the carp family (Cyprinidae). This species is endemic and found exclusively in the river systems of Sri Lanka, located in South Asia. It prefers to inhabit sections of rivers characterized by fairly swift, and sometimes turbulent, currents. Adult fish find refuge in the headwaters, choosing relatively deep areas – up to two meters – where they stay near the bottom among rocky substrates. Notably, juveniles, or fry, behave differently: they live in the lower reaches, preferring shallow waters with calm currents, and often form large schools.
These fish grow up to 25 cm in length. Their body is elongated, and their head is large. For successful long-term keeping, it is necessary to constantly maintain stable water parameters and a high level of dissolved oxygen. As for diet, the fish are undemanding; they can be offered dry sinking foods (granules, tablets), enriched with all necessary vitamins and trace elements.

After spawning is complete, the parents should be removed.
The species is sensitive to water quality and the accumulation of nitrogenous compounds, making effective filtration a mandatory condition for keeping them. Characteristic diseases include skin and gill flukes, trichodinosis, and mycobacteriosis. Prevention is based on maintaining stable environmental parameters, regular water changes, and preventing hypoxia.
When purchasing, choose active, mobile specimens without visible damage to fins or scales. As the species is endangered in the wild, it is important to ascertain the fish's origin—preference should be given to specimens bred in captivity. Avoid individuals showing signs of emaciation, sluggish behavior, or apathy.
