Aspidoras taurus

Adult Aspidoras taurus reach approximately 5 cm in length. Their bodies are protected by bony plates — modified scales that serve as reliable armor against small predators. Due to its strong and powerful constitution, the fish earned the name "bull," which refers to the Latin word taurus. Their coloration is light, dotted with dark speckles, and this pattern extends to their translucent fins. Near the mouth on the head are three pairs of sensitive barbels of different lengths, which help them find food among rocks and substrate. Adult females are usually larger than males, while the latter appear more slender.

Its natural habitat is in South America, in the upper basin of the Paraguay River, which originates in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. The regional landscape here is hilly, which results in quite strong currents in some parts of the rivers. The bottom of such bodies of water often consists of rocky or sandy substrates, abundant with snags.

Aspidoras taurus is a peaceful and social catfish that feels more comfortable in the company of its own kind, preferably in a group of at least 4–5 individuals. It is compatible with many other fish species, and thanks to its "armor," it can even get along with some more quarrelsome neighbors of comparable size.

For 4–5 Aspidoras taurus, the optimal aquarium volume starts from 60–80 liters. The decor can be chosen at your discretion, based on personal preferences or the needs of other inhabitants. If large or aggressive fish are planned for the aquarium, it is important to provide enough hiding places for each catfish. For successful keeping of Aspidoras taurus, it is vital to maintain stable water parameters and, if possible, create a moderate internal current. A powerful filtration system will handle these tasks well. However, do not forget about regular aquarium maintenance procedures: weekly partial water changes with fresh water, as well as removal of organic waste, such as food remnants and excrement.

This omnivorous species readily accepts most available foods of appropriate size. It is preferable to give sinking or easily submersible products, as the catfish is not adapted for feeding at the water surface.

Breeding this species is successful in artificial conditions if the fish are kept in a suitable environment and receive a balanced diet enriched with vitamins and trace elements. It has been noted that a gradual decrease in water temperature by several degrees, followed by maintaining these values, can stimulate spawning. This process mimics natural environmental changes characteristic of the rainy season, which is the breeding period for Aspidoras in nature. Parental instincts are not developed in them; the catfish attach their eggs to the surface of aquatic plants or rocks, and then abandon them. To protect the future offspring from being eaten, it is recommended to move the clutch to a separate tank.

Most health problems in fish often arise from unsuitable keeping conditions. Maintaining a stable and comfortable habitat is a key factor for successful keeping. If symptoms of illness appear, the first step is to check the water quality. If deviations are found, it is important to take immediate measures to eliminate them. If the symptoms do not disappear or worsen, medicinal treatment may be required.

When selecting individuals, pay attention to their activity and appearance. Healthy catfish should be active, show interest in foraging on the bottom, and have no visible damage, ulcers, or spots on their bodies. It is important to ensure that their fins are clean and free of any film. Avoid purchasing fish that look emaciated, have sunken bellies, or show signs of apathy, such as hovering in the water column or near the surface without apparent reason. Since the species is schooling, it is recommended to acquire a group of 4–6 individuals at once to minimize stress during adaptation to new conditions.
