Labyrinth fish Up to 40 litres Conservation status: Critically endangered CR

Family:Osphronemidae

Betta burdigala, or Bordeaux Betta, belongs to the family Osphronemidae. A distinctive feature of this fish is its beautiful red coloration, which reminded French researchers of the noble color of the famous Bordeaux wines, after which the species was named. In its natural habitat, the Betta burdigala population is endangered, which severely limits its export for sale. As a result, this fish is extremely rare in amateur aquariums.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Betta burdigala get?

An adult reaches 3 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Betta burdigala need?

The recommended volume is 40 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Betta burdigala need?

Temperature 22–30 °C, pH 4–6, hardness 0–5 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Betta burdigala live?

Around 3 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Betta burdigala aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Betta burdigala should be kept together?

Recommended setup: harem (1 male and several females). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Betta burdigala eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Betta burdigala?

The scientific name of the species is Betta burdigala, family Osphronemidae.
