The Bornean Pufferfish, known to specialists as Carinotetraodon borneensis, belongs to the family Tetraodontidae, or Pufferfish. It is less common in the aquarium fish market than, for example, its more widespread relative, the Red-eyed Pufferfish, but sometimes these species are supplied together. In general, its care is not difficult, and this pufferfish is unpretentious, with the exception of its specific dietary preferences.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Bornean Pufferfish get?

An adult reaches 4–5 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Bornean Pufferfish need?

The recommended volume is 60 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Bornean Pufferfish need?

Temperature 20–28 °C, pH 6–7.5, hardness 1–12 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Bornean Pufferfish live?

Around 8 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Bornean Pufferfish aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Bornean Pufferfish should be kept together?

Recommended setup: solitary + other species (large / compatible). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Bornean Pufferfish eat?

Diet type: meat / protein (live, frozen, fresh). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Bornean Pufferfish?

The scientific name of the species is Carinotetraodon borneensis, family Pufferfish (Tetraodontidae). It also appears in the literature as: Tetraodon borneensis, Tetrodon borneensis.
