Chocolate Tetra

Adults reach up to 3 cm in length. Sexual dimorphism in these fish is weakly expressed: males and females have a similar appearance. The body pattern consists of a wide black stripe that runs along the middle of the body from head to tail, separating a darker yellow back from a silvery belly. Red pigmentation can sometimes be observed on the fins.

Its natural habitat is in South America, in the upper basin of the Tapajós River. This river is a right tributary of the Amazon and originates in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Mato Grosso. The fish prefers small streams and rivers flowing through tropical forests. These bodies of water feature sandy substrates with an abundance of snags.

These fish are peaceful and schooling. It is advisable to keep them in a group of at least 8–10 individuals. With fewer numbers, they may become overly timid, especially if larger species are nearby. They are compatible with other non-aggressive freshwater fish species of comparable size.

For a school of 8–10 individuals, the optimal aquarium volume is from 54 liters. The choice of aquarium design is not critical and depends on the owner's preferences. However, Hyphessobrycon vilmae looks most harmonious in conditions that mimic its natural environment: with subdued lighting, among dense thickets of aquatic plants and snags. Dry leaves of some trees, laid on the bottom, can serve as an additional decorative element. As in natural rivers, these fallen leaves gradually decompose, releasing tannins, which gives the water a chemical composition similar to its natural environment. In addition, the leaves serve as a basis for the development of colonies of microorganisms, such as paramecium, which is a valuable secondary food source for fry. Successful long-term keeping of these fish directly depends on several factors, among which water quality plays a key role. The fish need stable water conditions, so it is important to avoid sharp fluctuations in hydrochemical parameters and temperature, and also to prevent the accumulation of dangerous concentrations of nitrogen cycle products (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates). Maintaining the balance of the aquarium ecosystem determines the level of necessary equipment, mainly an effective filtration system, and the regularity of care. Regular care includes weekly partial water changes, monitoring its basic parameters, timely removal of organic waste (food remnants, excrement), and replacing leaves, if they are used.

Feeding these fish is not difficult: in home aquariums, they readily accept most common aquarium foods. The daily diet can consist exclusively of dry products, such as flakes and granules. If desired and possible, the diet can be diversified with live or frozen foods, for example, artemia or daphnia.

The breeding strategy of the Chocolate Tetra is typical for most characin species. During spawning, females scatter eggs among plants or directly on open substrate, after which males fertilize them. There is no clearly defined breeding season; different individuals can produce offspring at different times of the year. Parental instincts are not developed in these fish, so there is no care for the offspring. If the goal is to preserve the brood, fertilized eggs must be transferred to a separate tank with water conditions identical to the main aquarium. Otherwise, the eggs will most likely be eaten.

Specific diseases that affect only this particular fish species have not been identified. When kept in suitable conditions, including high water quality, a balanced diet, and peaceful tank mates, health issues usually do not arise. The most common cause of illness is a deterioration of living conditions, which weakens the immune system and makes the fish susceptible to infections that are always present in their environment. Upon noticing initial signs of sickness (such as lethargy, emaciation, refusal to eat, or clamped fins), it is crucial to immediately check the basic water parameters. Often, restoring acceptable living conditions will lead to self-recovery, but if the fish is too weak or has suffered visible damage, medicinal treatment may be required.

When choosing individuals, attention should be paid to their activity and the integrity of their skin. Healthy fish stay in a school, show curiosity, and actively respond to food. Avoid specimens with signs of emaciation, damaged fins, or an unnatural coating on the body. It is important to consider that in commercial aquariums, coloration may be paler due to stress, but the fish should not appear apathetic or hide in corners. It is recommended to acquire a group of 8–10 individuals, as solitary keeping causes severe stress to the species.
