Ctenolucius hujeta, more commonly known as the Freshwater Barracuda or Pike Characin, is a member of the Ctenoluciidae family. This species is a fast and efficient predator. Despite its predatory lifestyle, it is peaceful and even somewhat timid, but this only applies to fish of comparable or larger size. Any other aquarium inhabitants that can fit into the Barracuda's mouth will invariably be considered prey.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Freshwater Barracuda get?

An adult reaches 22 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Freshwater Barracuda need?

The recommended volume is 650 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Freshwater Barracuda need?

Temperature 22–25 °C, pH 5–7.5, hardness 6–15 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Freshwater Barracuda live?

Around 8 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Freshwater Barracuda aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (dangerous to smaller ones). This is a predatory species — any fish small enough to fit in its mouth will eventually be eaten.

How many Freshwater Barracuda should be kept together?

Recommended setup: schooling (usually from 5–6 individuals and more). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Freshwater Barracuda eat?

Diet type: meat / protein (live, frozen, fresh). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Freshwater Barracuda?

The scientific name of the species is Ctenolucius hujeta, family Ctenoluciidae. It also appears in the literature as: Ctenolucius insculptus, Hydrocynus hujeta, Luciocharax hujeta.
