Haplochromis nyererei, also known as Nyerere's Haplochromis, belongs to the family Cichlidae. The fish is named after Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania (1961-1985). This fish is not difficult to keep, but its aggressiveness towards other males can be a problem; therefore, the optimal solution is to keep only one male in the aquarium.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Haplochromis nyererei get?

An adult reaches 7–8 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Haplochromis nyererei need?

The recommended volume is 250 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Haplochromis nyererei need?

Temperature 23–27 °C, pH 7–8.5, hardness 4–15 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Haplochromis nyererei live?

Around 6 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Haplochromis nyererei aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Haplochromis nyererei should be kept together?

Recommended setup: harem (1 male and several females). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Haplochromis nyererei eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Haplochromis nyererei?

The scientific name of the species is Haplochromis nyererei, family Cichlids (Cichlidae). It also appears in the literature as: Pundamilia nyerere, Pundamilia nyererei.
