Pachypanchax arnoulti, or Arnoult's Panchax, is a member of the Aplocheilidae family. This fish readily adapts to aquarium conditions and does not require complex care, but tankmates small enough to swallow are likely to be eaten, so it is often kept on its own. The species received its scientific name in honor of researcher Jacques Arnoult, in recognition of his significant contribution to the study of Madagascar's ichthyofauna.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Pachypanchax arnoulti get?

An adult reaches 8 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Pachypanchax arnoulti need?

The recommended volume is 120 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Pachypanchax arnoulti need?

Temperature 20–28 °C, pH 6–7, hardness 2–10 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Pachypanchax arnoulti live?

Around 3 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Pachypanchax arnoulti aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful, active/mobile. Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Pachypanchax arnoulti should be kept together?

Recommended setup: schooling (usually from 5–6 individuals and more). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Pachypanchax arnoulti eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Pachypanchax arnoulti?

The scientific name of the species is Pachypanchax arnoulti, family Aplocheilidae.
