Protomelas, or the 'Red Empress' Cichlid, also known by its scientific name Protomelas taeniolatus (formerly classified as Haplochromis taeniolatus), is a member of the Cichlidae family. A distinguishing feature of this species is its extraordinarily bright coloration, dominated by fiery red and orange tones, complemented by an elegant pattern on its fins. Thanks to its attractiveness and relative undemanding nature regarding keeping and breeding conditions, this species deservedly ranks among the most popular African cichlids.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Protomelas get?

An adult reaches 15 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Protomelas need?

The recommended volume is 280 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Protomelas need?

Temperature 23–28 °C, pH 7.6–8.8, hardness 10–25 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Protomelas live?

Around 10 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Protomelas aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Protomelas should be kept together?

Recommended setup: harem (1 male and several females). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Protomelas eat?

Diet type: plant-based (algae, vegetables). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Protomelas?

The scientific name of the species is Protomelas taeniolatus, family Cichlids (Cichlidae). It also appears in the literature as: Cyrtocara taeniolatus, Haplochromis cancellus, Haplochromis taeniolatus.
