One of the unique features of this species is the structure of its swim bladder: it is bifurcated, with one part being significantly larger, functioning as an additional respiratory organ. This ability allows the Ropefish to remain out of water for some time, provided there is high humidity. This adaptation is vital for survival in bodies of water with low dissolved oxygen content. It is important to note that breathing atmospheric air is mandatory for them; without regular access to the surface, the Reedfish cannot survive and will die.
The natural habitat of this fish is located in West Africa. It is found in countries such as Angola, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, and also in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
