Slender Hemiodopsis

Adults grow up to 15 cm in length. They are distinguished by a slender, elongated, silver-colored body adorned with a black horizontal stripe that begins immediately behind the dorsal fin and extends along the tail, gracefully curving along its lower part. A bright red dash can also be seen on the lower edge of the caudal fin. The dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins of these fish are short and triangular. This body structure indicates Hemiodopsis as a fast swimmer, capable of swift bursts.

The natural habitat of these fish is in South America, specifically in modern-day Brazil and Venezuela. They are found in the backwaters of large rivers and numerous lakes located in the Amazonian rainforests.

These peaceful and friendly fish are highly active, which, however, may not be appreciated by some calmer species. They coexist well with Amazonian cichlids, catfishes, and other characins of similar size and temperament.

These fish require significant swimming space, so the aquarium should be at least 250 liters in volume. Any sandy substrate is suitable for decoration, along with several snags, intertwined roots or tree branches, and, of course, rooted and floating plants. From these elements, several shelters should be created where Hemiodopsis can find refuge if it feels threatened, as, despite its not-so-small size, it is quite timid. Special attention should be paid to water quality: it is necessary to minimize the concentration of organic waste and maintain a high oxygen level. Other important aspects include a temperature regime in the range of 23–27°C, slightly acidic pH values, and soft to medium water hardness. When selecting equipment, all the listed conditions must be considered to create an optimal habitat. Also, the aquarium design must include a lid to prevent the fish from accidentally jumping out.

The diet of these fish can include all types of appropriately sized dry, frozen, and live foods. It is important to enrich the diet with plant-based supplements, ensuring its diversity by combining several types of products, such as dry flakes, bloodworms, and spirulina wafers.

Reliable data on the successful breeding of Slender Hemiodopsis in aquarium conditions has not yet been reported. Most of the fish offered for sale are imported at a young age either from their natural habitat or from specialized nurseries.

The main threat to fish health is unsuitable keeping conditions, including pH, dGH, water temperature, and other parameters that do not meet requirements, as well as a high level of pollution. At the first signs of illness (such as lethargy, loss of appetite, unusual growths on the body), it is recommended to immediately check all water parameters and, if deviations are found, correct them. Often, such actions are sufficient to restore the fish's health.

When purchasing, select specimens with clean fins and no scale damage, as the species is prone to injury during transportation. It is important to ensure that the fish are actively swimming and exhibiting schooling behavior, avoiding specimens with signs of emaciation or unnaturally bloated bellies. Since the fish tend to be timid, they may appear sluggish in the store, but healthy individuals should react to movement when approached. It is recommended to acquire a group of 6–10 individuals at once, as keeping single fish leads to severe stress and refusal to eat.
