Rasbora elegans, or the Elegant Rasbora, belongs to the family Cyprinidae. This fish is characterized by an active, peaceful disposition and good hardiness, successfully adapting to various conditions. Despite its qualities, it is not often found among amateur aquarists, possibly due to its unassuming coloration and the need for a large aquarium.
Adults can reach up to 15 cm in length, although in a home aquarium, this size is extremely rare. Females are usually larger than males, but their coloration is less vibrant than that of males. The main body color is gray, with a slight greenish tint on the large scales, and the belly has a silvery hue. Dark markings characteristic of this species are located in the central part of the body and at the base of the tail.
Its natural habitats are located in Southeast Asia, including Peninsular Malaysia, as well as the islands of Borneo and Sumatra from the Greater Sunda Islands group. The Elegant Rasbora inhabits diverse environments: from fast-flowing small rivers to vast, ancient peat swamps hidden under the canopy of tropical forests.
The Elegant Rasbora is a schooling species, requiring a group of at least 6 individuals. Its peaceful nature is combined with high activity, making it not the best choice for cohabitation with slow-moving fish, and considering its size, not suitable for very small species. Compatible and popular tankmates include representatives of cyprinids, catfish, and cichlids, such as the Red-tailed Barb, Crossbanded Barb, Five-banded Barb, and various large Rasboras.
The choice of decorations is less critical than the amount of free swimming space and water quality. The minimum tank volume for a school of Elegant Rasboras is 250 liters. The aquarium can be decorated to imitate a river section, using a substrate of various sized gravel, several large snags, and boulders. You can complement the scene with hardy plants such as Java Fern, Bolbitis heudelotii, and Anubias, placed along the side walls. Another decoration option is to recreate the conditions of a peat swamp. In such an environment, subdued lighting, an abundance of roots, snags, and fallen leaves on the bottom are appropriate. A bag of alder cones will color the water with a characteristic “tea” hue and help establish slightly acidic pH values. A similar effect is achieved by using alder cone filter media. Among the plants for such a setup, Java Fern, Java Moss, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Cryptocoryne balansae, and others are often chosen. To prevent fish from accidentally jumping out, the aquarium must be equipped with a lid. For a riverine setup, it is advisable to install an additional device to create internal current. In addition to a filter, the minimum equipment set includes a heater, a lighting system, and air stones. Hydrochemical water parameters are selected depending on the type of setup, but in general, they are universal, ranging from acidic to neutral pH values with low carbonate hardness. It is important to note that for a “swamp” type setup, the pH should be below or equal to 6.0. Water quality is of key importance: fish are sensitive to the accumulation of organic waste. Therefore, weekly partial water changes (15–20% of the volume) with fresh water and regular substrate cleaning are mandatory.
These fish readily accept all types of food: both dry and frozen or live. To provide the fish with all necessary trace elements and maintain vibrant coloration, a diet consisting mainly of meaty products such as bloodworms, insect larvae, and large daphnia is recommended.
This species is an egg-scatterer: females scatter eggs in the water column, and males immediately fertilize them. Parental instincts in these fish are poorly developed: after spawning, adults may eat both their eggs and the hatched fry. To preserve offspring, it is recommended to breed them in a separate spawning aquarium. The spawning tank setup should be simple, with an emphasis on a substrate consisting of sufficiently large particles that do not fit tightly together and form voids, such as pebbles or decorative glass marbles. When the eggs sink to the bottom, most of them fall into these voids, becoming inaccessible to adult fish. A similar effect is achieved by using a fine-mesh net secured to the bottom. Another way to ensure egg safety is to use low-growing, fine-leaved plants or mosses, such as Riccia fluitans and Java moss, which are planted over most of the substrate surface (in this case, any substrate can be used). Dense thickets of plants provide reliable cover for the eggs, no worse than a special substrate. The size of the spawning aquarium is usually 100–120 liters. Equipment includes an air stone, a heater, and a simple low-power sponge filter to avoid accidentally sucking in eggs and fry. Spawning occurs under dim lighting, so a light source is not required initially. The stimulus for the start of the breeding period is establishing the water temperature at the upper permissible limits with a slightly acidic pH value and daily feeding with protein-rich food (live or frozen). After some time, the females will noticeably round out, and the males will begin to actively court them. At this point, a separate tank should be prepared, filled with water from the main aquarium, and then several females and the brightest males should be transferred there. Spawning can be initiated by gradually adding cool water every few hours, lowering the temperature by 2–3 degrees. Females lay eggs in portions, which prolongs spawning for 4–5 days. The end of spawning is easiest to determine by the females – they will become slender again. After this, the fish should be returned to the main aquarium. Fry will appear approximately 24–48 hours later, and after another 3–4 days, they will begin to swim freely. Feeding is done with specialized micro-food for aquarium fish fry.
Balanced nutrition and properly selected keeping conditions are the best prevention of diseases in freshwater fish. If the first signs of illness appear, such as changes in coloration or behavior, the first step should be to check the water parameters and quality. If necessary, all values should be brought back to normal, and only then should treatment begin.
When choosing an Elegant Rasbora, it is important to consider that this species is rarely widely available and can be timid during transport. Inspect the fish for damage to scales and fins, and ensure there are no signs of emaciation or unnatural behavior, such as constantly hovering at the surface or bottom. — prioritize individuals with active behavior and clear eyes — ask the seller about husbandry conditions, as fish from flowing waters may require different adaptation than individuals from stagnant “black” waters — avoid buying single fish, as this schooling species experiences significant stress without conspecifics.

An adult reaches 15 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.
