Aulonocara jacobfreibergi, also known as the Malawi Butterfly or Fairy Cichlid, is scientifically classified as Aulonocara jacobfreibergi and belongs to the family Cichlidae. This species is endemic to the mountainous Lake Malawi in East Africa. Its primary habitat is the southern part of the lake, where sandy bottom areas alternate with rocky formations along the shores. These fish are easy to keep and breed. Due to their relatively peaceful nature compared to other Malawian cichlids, they successfully coexist with many types of aquarium inhabitants.
Adults of this fish can grow up to 15–17 cm in length. Their bodies are colored in orange or yellow tones, which gradually transition to blue hues on the head, as well as along the edges of the fins and tail. Sexual dimorphism is not clearly pronounced; males are generally slightly larger than females and display more intense colors, especially during courtship.
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. In their natural habitat, these fish prefer coastal zones where rocky bottom areas alternate with sandy regions. They lead a bottom-dwelling lifestyle, often hiding in crevices and caves among rocks, which they use for protection and reproduction. The water in these areas is characterized by high transparency, alkaline reaction, and consistently high hardness.
Male Malawi Butterflies show aggression towards each other. In a small aquarium, clashes over territory and females are inevitable. Additionally, they may attack fish with similar coloration. Otherwise, they are quite friendly towards representatives of other species. The optimal option is to keep one male and several females (3 to 6) in the company of peaceful, medium-sized fish.
For comfortable keeping of a small group of adult individuals, an aquarium of at least 432 liters is required. For decoration, sandy substrate and undemanding aquatic plants such as Anubias, Vallisneria, or Sagittaria subulata are preferred. Several large stones or rocks can be used to create caves, grottoes, and crevices that serve as shelters. It is important to maintain high pH and dGH values in the aquarium. An effective filtration system combined with weekly partial water changes (15–20% of the total volume) will help ensure stable hydrochemical parameters. It is advisable to use filter media that help maintain water hardness to avoid sharp fluctuations.
In their natural environment, these fish forage for food on the bottom, sifting through the substrate with their mouths in search of small invertebrates, crustaceans, and vegetation. In a home aquarium, it is recommended to use specialized sinking foods for Malawian cichlids. Such foods should contain all the necessary nutritional plant and protein components. If the pellets or flakes are too large, they can be crushed for easier ingestion by the fish. Homemade foods are undesirable. Feed in small portions, 3–4 times a day.
Under suitable conditions, the appearance of offspring is quite likely. When the breeding season begins, the male selects a specific area of the aquarium bottom that will become the spawning site. He then begins to actively and sometimes quite persistently court the female. Once the female is ready, she accepts his advances and lays several dozen eggs, which she immediately collects into her mouth. At this moment, the male releases sperm, and the fertilization of the eggs occurs in her mouth. After this, the male no longer participates in the protection and care of the offspring. The entire incubation period, as well as the first weeks of life, the fry spend in the female's mouth. During this period, the female refuses food and can noticeably lose weight. If feeding before spawning was irregular or the diet was poor, the female may release the fry prematurely or, in the worst case, eat them. During spawning, it is advisable to temporarily move tank mates to a separate tank (if any) to avoid possible attacks from the male, or temporarily move the cichlids themselves, and return them after the breeding period. To ensure the survival of the fry later on, it is advisable to keep them in a separate aquarium with the same water conditions.
Most diseases of Malawian cichlids are often caused by unsuitable keeping conditions or poor-quality food, which frequently leads to the development of "Malawi Bloat. If the first symptoms are detected, it is necessary to check the water parameters for high concentrations of dangerous substances such as ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. If necessary, all parameters should be normalized, and only then should treatment begin.
When selecting individuals, attention should be paid to their activity and clarity of coloration. Healthy fish should show curiosity, have clean fins without signs of erosion, ulcers, or white film, and a plump body without a sunken belly. Avoid specimens that appear sluggish, constantly hide in a corner, or show signs of emaciation. It is recommended to acquire a group of young fish to later form a harem structure, as adult males exhibit strong territoriality and can be aggressive towards conspecifics in a confined store space.
The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care
An adult reaches 15–17 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.
The recommended volume is 432 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.
Temperature 25–29 °C, pH 7.6–9, hardness 10–25 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.
