Aulonocara baenschi

Adult males can reach 12 cm in length, while females grow up to 9 cm. Males have vibrant, predominantly yellow coloration, with a blue tint on the lower part of the head and along the edge of the dorsal fin. Females appear more subdued, with a gray body and vertical dark stripes on their sides.

Aulonocara baenschi is endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. In nature, the species primarily inhabits the western coast in the so-called intermediate zones, where rocky shores transition into sandy, shallow bottoms. The fish prefer areas with sandy substrate and scattered boulders, at depths of up to 15 meters.

Males of this species are aggressive towards each other. In a small aquarium, this will inevitably lead to skirmishes over territory and female attention. They may also attack other fish with similar coloration. Otherwise, they are friendly towards members of other species. The optimal solution is to keep a single male Yellow Peacock Cichlid with several females, surrounded by peaceful, medium-sized fish.

For the successful keeping of a small group of adult individuals, a tank of at least 200 liters will be required. As decor elements, several large stones or rocks can be used, along with other decorations, a sandy substrate, and hardy plants such as Anubias, Vallisneria, or Dwarf Sagittaria. It is important to maintain high pH and dGH values. An effective filtration system combined with weekly water changes of 15–20% of the volume will ensure the stability of hydrochemical parameters. To prevent significant fluctuations in dGH, it is recommended to use filter media that increase water hardness.

In their natural environment, these fish forage for food on the bottom, sifting through the substrate with their mouths in search of small invertebrates, crustaceans, and vegetation. In a home aquarium, it is recommended to use specialized sinking foods for Malawian cichlids. Such foods should contain all the necessary nutritional plant and protein components. If the pellets or flakes are too large, they can be crushed for easier ingestion by the fish. Homemade foods are undesirable. Feed in small portions, 3–4 times a day.

Under favorable conditions, the appearance of Aulonocara baenschi offspring is highly probable. During the spawning period, the male selects a spot on the aquarium bottom that will become the future spawning site. He then begins to actively, and sometimes quite persistently, court the female. When the female is ready to spawn, she lays several dozen eggs, which she immediately takes into her mouth. At this moment, the male releases milt, and fertilization of the eggs occurs inside the female's mouth. After this, the male does not participate in the protection and care of the offspring. The entire incubation period and the first weeks of the fry's life are spent in the female's mouth. During this time, the female does not eat, which can lead to significant weight loss. If feeding was irregular or the diet insufficient before spawning, the female is likely to release the fry prematurely, or, in the worst case, may eat them. During spawning, it is recommended to temporarily remove other aquarium inhabitants to avoid possible attacks from the male. Alternatively, the cichlids can be moved to a separate tank and returned after the breeding period. To ensure the survival of the fry later on, they should be kept in a separate aquarium with identical water conditions.

The main cause of most diseases in Malawian cichlids is often improper keeping conditions and inadequate food quality, which frequently leads to the development of ailments such as Malawi Bloat. Upon detecting the first signs of illness, it is necessary to check the water parameters and ensure there are no high concentrations of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and other dangerous substances. All parameters should be brought back to normal, and only then can treatment begin.

When selecting individuals, attention should be paid to the fish's activity and the cleanliness of their skin. Healthy Aulonocara should be curious, have vibrant coloration without spots, ulcers, or fin damage. Avoid purchasing fish that appear emaciated, stay near the water surface, or show signs of apathy, as this may indicate chronic stress or infectious diseases. Keep in mind that females of different Aulonocara species look very similar, so it is recommended to purchase fish from reputable breeders to guarantee species purity.
