Aulonocara hansbaenschi

Adult males can reach a length of 12 cm, while females are usually smaller, growing to about 9 cm. A distinctive feature of males is their bright blue coloration, complemented by a red "belt" that stretches in a wide diagonal stripe from the head to the pelvic fins. Due to this characteristic detail, this species is sometimes called the "Red-shouldered Peacock". Females, in contrast, have a more modest appearance: their coloration is gray-brown, and barely noticeable vertical stripes are located along the sides of their bodies.

Aulonocara hansbaenschi is endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. In their natural habitat, these fish inhabit coastal zones with sandy bottoms interspersed with rocky areas. They prefer to stay in shallow waters, typically at depths of 4 to 6 meters, using crevices and caves in rocks as shelters.

Male Aulonocara hansbaenschi exhibit aggression towards each other. In a small aquarium, conflicts over territory and female attention are inevitable. Moreover, they may attack other fish if they have similar coloration. However, otherwise, these cichlids show a quite friendly attitude towards representatives of other species. The optimal solution is to keep one male with a group of several females (3 to 6), surrounded by calm, medium-sized fish.

For comfortable keeping of a small group of adult fish, an aquarium of at least 150 L will be required. Sand substrate is typically used for decoration. It can be supplemented with undemanding plants capable of growing in hard water, such as Anubias, Vallisneria, or Sagittaria subulata. Several large stones or rocks will help create caves, grottoes, crevices, and other decorative shelters. It is important to maintain high pH and dGH values in the water. Installing a powerful filtration system and regular weekly water changes of 15–20% will help maintain the necessary hydrochemical conditions. It is advisable to use filters with materials that can increase water hardness to avoid sharp fluctuations in dGH.

In natural conditions, these fish feed at the bottom, sifting through the substrate with their mouths to separate small invertebrates, crustaceans, algae, and other organic particles. In a home aquarium, it is recommended to use specialized sinking foods for Malawian cichlids. Such foods should contain a balanced complex of both plant and protein components. Large flakes or granules can be crushed if necessary for easier consumption by the fish. The use of homemade foods is not encouraged. Feed small portions 3–4 times a day.

Offspring are quite likely to appear under favorable keeping conditions. With the onset of the breeding season, the male chooses a specific area on the aquarium bottom, which becomes the future spawning site. He then begins to actively, and sometimes quite persistently, court the female. When the female is ready to spawn, she accepts the courtship and lays several dozen eggs, which she immediately collects into her mouth. At this moment, the male releases milt, and fertilization of the eggs occurs directly in the female's mouth. The entire incubation period and the first weeks of life, the fry spend inside the female's mouth. During this time, she refuses food and may noticeably lose weight. If feeding before spawning was irregular or the diet was poor, the female will most likely release the fry prematurely, or, in the worst case, even eat them. The male, in contrast, takes no part in protecting and caring for the offspring. During spawning, it is recommended to transfer aquarium mates to another tank (if any) to avoid possible attacks from the male, or, conversely, temporarily place the cichlids there and return them after the breeding period. To ensure the safety of the young, they are subsequently kept in a separate aquarium with identical water parameters.

Most diseases of Malawian cichlids are often caused by unsuitable keeping conditions or poor-quality food, which frequently leads to the development of "Malawi Bloat. If the first symptoms are detected, it is necessary to check the water parameters for high concentrations of dangerous substances such as ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. If necessary, all parameters should be normalized, and only then should treatment begin.

When purchasing, choose active fish with clean fins and no visible damage, sores, or film on their scales. It is important to assess the behavior of the individuals in the store: healthy fish show interest in their surroundings and do not appear emaciated. It is recommended to avoid specimens that constantly hide, breathe heavily, or show signs of apathy, as this may indicate stress or hidden diseases. When acquiring fish, it should be noted that males of this species exhibit strong territoriality, so it is important to maintain the correct sex ratio when stocking the aquarium, usually one male to several females.
