Anostomus ternetzi, or Ternetz's Anostomus, belongs to the family Anostomidae. This species was named after the Swiss ichthyologist Carl Ternetz (1870–1928), who collected the holotype. Along with the Common Anostomus, it is one of the two most well-known and popular representatives of its family.
The elongated body shape of the fish somewhat resembles a pike. Its coloration is a combination of black and white stripes. Young individuals are significantly lighter compared to adults. The fins are transparent, with a slight brownish tint.
Its natural habitat is in South America, in the river systems of the upper Orinoco basin, which covers territories in Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. In the wild, these fish are most often found in shallow waters, along the rocky banks of fast-flowing rivers.
These fish can live either alone or in groups consisting of 6–7 individuals or more. In small groups or pairs, they may show unfriendly behavior towards conspecifics, so the more fish, the better. They coexist well with other non-aggressive species adapted to life in fast-flowing conditions.
For a single fish, the optimal aquarium volume starts from 100 liters. For decor, a rocky substrate, piles of smooth stones, rock formations, and various shapes of driftwood are preferred. The absence of aquatic plants is acceptable, but if desired, several hardy species resistant to strong currents and with well-developed root systems can be placed. To recreate natural conditions, an artificial current system must be provided. Often, a powerful filtration system combined with aeration can provide the necessary water movement. This system is also a key factor for the successful keeping of Anostomus ternetzi, as it requires clean, flowing, oxygen-rich water. Bright lighting is welcome, as it promotes the growth of algae, which serves as an additional food source.
Anostomus ternetzi is an omnivorous species. In natural conditions, its diet consists of algae growing on rocks and small invertebrates. In an aquarium, a varied daily menu should be provided, including flakes, granules, as well as live or frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworms. It is important that the food contains vegetable components.
Breeding anostomuses in spawning tanks presents significant difficulties and is rarely successful in home aquariums. The fish form pairs that lay eggs on a substrate of dense vegetation or directly on the bottom. Stimulating spawning requires creating specific conditions that mimic seasonal changes in the natural habitat, which demands professional skills and precise control of water parameters.
The onset and progression of various diseases are typically directly related to keeping conditions. The appearance of the first signs of illness often signals unfavorable changes in the external environment. This could be an increase in the concentration of nitrogen cycle products (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates), sharp fluctuations in pH or dGH values, or the use of poor-quality food. In such situations, the primary task is to restore the biological balance in the aquarium system. If symptoms persist, medicinal treatment should be considered.
When purchasing, choose active fish with clean fins and no visible body damage. It is important to ensure there are no white spots, ulcers, or signs of emaciation, as these fish are sensitive to stress during transportation. In the store, observe the behavior of the individuals: healthy anostomuses should show curiosity and actively explore the bottom or decorations, rather than hiding in the corners of the aquarium.
The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care
An adult reaches 12 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.
The recommended volume is 100 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.
Temperature 20–28 °C, pH 5.5–7.5, hardness 1–15 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.
Around 8 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.
Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.
Recommended setup: both solitary and in group (flexible). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.
Diet type: plant-based with meat additives. Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.
