Iodotropheus sprengerae, also known as Iodotropheus sprengerae or Lavender Mbuna, and colloquially as the Rusty Cichlid, belongs to the family Cichlidae. This fish is endemic to Lake Malawi, located in East Africa, and is part of the Mbuna cichlid group. It can be found in shallow coastal areas dominated by rocky beaches. This species makes an excellent choice for novice aquarists, as the fish is undemanding regarding both keeping conditions and breeding. It also coexists well with other aquarium inhabitants of similar size and temperament.
Adults of this fish reach a length of up to 8 cm. Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced: males are distinguished by a slightly larger number of yellow spots on the anal fin, and they are usually larger and have brighter coloration. The color palette of the fish varies from bluish-orange to rich rusty. This particular feature is the reason for one of their common names — the Rusty Cichlid.
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. In nature, the fish primarily inhabit shallow coastal areas dominated by rocky biotopes, rocky beaches, and reef zones. Distribution is limited to individual islands and reefs in the southeastern part of the lake. The water in these areas is characterized by high hardness, alkaline reaction, and stable temperature.
Among Mbuna cichlids, this species is considered one of the least aggressive. Thanks to this, Iodotropheus sprengerae coexists well with other peaceful fish from Lake Malawi, as well as with species from other families capable of adapting to similar conditions. In intraspecific relationships, males may exhibit competition for females and territory. The optimal solution is to keep one male Lavender Mbuna with several females.
For comfortable keeping of a small group of adult individuals, an aquarium of at least 80 L will be required. Sand substrate is typically used for decoration, and shelters are formed from piles of stones and rock fragments, creating cave-like structures and crevices. The presence of live plants is not mandatory, but undemanding species such as Anubias or Vallisneria can be planted for decoration. High pH and dGH values must be maintained. An effective filtration system combined with weekly partial water changes (10–15% of the total volume) will help stably maintain the required hydrochemical parameters. To prevent significant fluctuations in water hardness (dGH), it is recommended to use filters with materials capable of increasing it.
These fish readily accept a variety of foods — both dry and frozen, as well as live. However, to maintain their health, it is especially important to provide a balanced diet that includes both protein and plant components. Specialized foods developed for Malawian cichlids are an ideal solution, as their composition already includes all the necessary nutrients.
The appearance of offspring in Iodotropheus sprengerae is quite likely when favorable conditions are created. During the breeding period, the male selects a specific area on the aquarium bottom, often a flat stone, which becomes the spawning site, after which he actively begins courtship. At this time, his coloration is noticeably brighter, signaling the onset of the breeding season. As soon as the female is ready, she lays several dozen eggs, which she immediately collects into her mouth. At the same moment, the male releases milt, and fertilization of the eggs occurs in the female's oral cavity. The male does not take further part in protecting or caring for the offspring. The entire incubation period, as well as the first weeks of life, the fry spend in the female's mouth. During this period, she refrains from eating and may noticeably lose weight. If feeding before spawning was irregular or the diet was insufficient, the female will likely release the fry prematurely, and in the worst case, may even eat them. During spawning, it is recommended to temporarily move other aquarium inhabitants to a separate tank to avoid possible attacks from the male, or, conversely, to place these cichlids there, and return them after the breeding period. To ensure the safety of the young in the future, it is advisable to keep the fry in a separate aquarium with identical water parameters.
The main cause of most diseases in these fish is unsuitable keeping conditions and poor-quality nutrition. If initial symptoms are observed, it is first necessary to check water parameters and the concentration of dangerous substances such as ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. If the indicators deviate from the norm, they should be brought back into order, and only then should treatment begin.
When selecting individuals, attention should be paid to their activity and the cleanliness of their integument. Healthy fish show curiosity, have bright coloration without spots, ulcers, or scale damage. It is important to avoid specimens with signs of emaciation, sunken bellies, or apathetic behavior, which may indicate stress or hidden diseases. In the store, fish should demonstrate a normal reaction to external stimuli. — inspect the fins for integrity and absence of signs of rot — check the operation of the gill covers; breathing should be measured — ensure there are no signs of timidity and a constant desire to hide in the corner of the aquarium.
The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care
An adult reaches 8 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.
The recommended volume is 80 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.
Temperature 25–29 °C, pH 7.6–8.8, hardness 10–25 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.
Around 7 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.
Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.
