Meta Corydoras

Adults of this species reach 4–5 cm and have distinctive markings. A dark stripe runs along the back from the dorsal fin to the tail. The head also bears dark lines through the eyes, creating the appearance of a black mask — hence one of its common names. This mask-like pattern is found in many Corydoras species. The meta corydoras looks so similar to the arched corydoras that the two are often confused.

The meta corydoras is endemic to South America. In nature, it inhabits the Río Meta basin in Colombia. The fish prefer slow-moving areas with silty or sandy substrates and dense aquatic vegetation.

This is a peaceful, schooling species that is most active near the bottom. To keep stress low and ensure well-being, house a group of six or more. It does well with other non-aggressive fish that occupy the middle and upper levels.

A group requires a tank of at least 60 litres. Use soft sand as the substrate, since sharp gravel particles can damage the fish's sensitive barbels. Include live plants, driftwood and stones to create shelter. Maintain water quality with effective filtration and regular partial water changes.

The species is omnivorous. Feed a varied diet of quality sinking foods: specialized tablets for bottom feeders, granules or flakes. Supplement regularly with live or frozen food such as brine shrimp, daphnia or bloodworm.

Breeding is fairly straightforward. Spawning occurs in pairs or in groups and is triggered by frequent partial water changes with cool water. The female lays eggs on plant leaves, stones or the tank glass. Once spawning ends, remove the adults to prevent egg-eating. Eggs hatch within 5 days, and the fry then become free-swimming.

The species has a strong immune system when conditions are right. Poor water quality is the main threat, triggering bacterial infections and damage to the delicate barbels. Prevent this by keeping the substrate clean and avoiding overfeeding, which causes organic waste to accumulate.

When buying, choose active fish with clean skin and undamaged fins. Check the barbels — they should be intact with no signs of erosion. Avoid specimens showing signs of starvation, lethargy, or visible spots on the body.
