Other scientific names: Nannostomus marginatus

A stunning representative of the Lebiasinidae family, also known as the Coral Red Pencilfish, is the Red Pencilfish, scientifically named Nannostomus mortenthaleri. This characin species was discovered relatively recently—its scientific description appeared only in 2001. Despite this, it has already gained significant popularity among aquarists worldwide. However, it's worth noting that most specimens offered for sale are still wild-caught, which can create certain difficulties with their adaptation to a home aquarium.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Red Pencilfish get?

An adult reaches 3 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Red Pencilfish need?

The recommended volume is 81 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Red Pencilfish need?

Temperature 22–28 °C, pH 6–7, hardness 2–10 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Red Pencilfish live?

Around 5 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Red Pencilfish aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Red Pencilfish should be kept together?

Recommended setup: medium group (6–8 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Red Pencilfish eat?

Diet type: small / appropriate size / pieces. Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Red Pencilfish?

The scientific name of the species is Nannostomus mortenthaleri, family Lebiasinidae. It also appears in the literature as: Nannostomus marginatus.
