This species can be an excellent choice even for beginner aquarists, as it combines ease of care, simple breeding, compatibility with many other fish species, and, of course, attractive coloration.
The species is closely related to the Eastern Rainbowfish and the Cherry Rainbowfish, so they are often confused due to their external similarities. Adult individuals of this fish can reach approximately 12.5 cm in length. Their coloration consists of a bluish-gray background with reddish or pinkish stripes, which can merge to create an overall red hue. Males are usually larger than females and have more developed dorsal and anal fins.
Its natural habitat is the island of New Guinea, specifically the territory belonging to Indonesia. The Red-striped Rainbowfish inhabits lowland rivers with slow currents, preferring areas with abundant floating vegetation. These fish typically stay near the banks, finding shelter among submerged branches and tree or shrub roots.
This active and peaceful fish coexists well with other non-aggressive species of similar size. However, it is advisable to avoid keeping Red-striped Rainbowfish with slower tankmates, as their excessive activity can negatively affect them. For comfortable existence, it is recommended to keep these fish in a school of at least 6–8 individuals of both sexes.
For a small school of these fish, an aquarium of at least 100 L is recommended. The aquascape should include dense plant thickets, including floating plants, arranged so that spacious areas remain for free swimming. The choice of substrate is at the discretion of the aquarist and depends on the needs of the plants. It is important to note that the Red-striped Rainbowfish prefers subdued lighting and may react poorly to strong currents, often created by filters. Therefore, aquarium equipment should be selected with these features in mind. High water quality is very important for successful fish keeping. An effective filtration system and regular water changes of 15–20% of the tank volume with fresh water will help ensure optimal conditions.
This species is not demanding regarding its diet and readily accepts most common foods, whether live, frozen, or dry. To allow the fish to display the best shades of their coloration, it is recommended to combine various products. For example, flakes and pellets can be alternated with bloodworms or brine shrimp.
Rainbowfish can be bred both in a community tank and in a specially equipped spawning tank. Optimal conditions for stimulating the breeding period include a temperature of 26–28°C and medium hard water with a slightly alkaline reaction (up to pH 7.0). The spawning tank should contain thickets of fine-leaved plants (live or artificial) where the females will lay their eggs. The spawning process lasts about 2 weeks, with the female laying several dozen eggs daily, which are fertilized by the male. Parental instincts are absent in these fish, so after spawning, they show no interest in their offspring. If breeding occurs in a community tank, it is advisable to transfer the eggs to a separate tank with identical conditions to prevent them from being eaten by other fish. In the absence of a spawning tank, dense clusters of floating plants can be used to provide shelter for the fry. The incubation period lasts approximately 7–12 days. In the first days after hatching, the fry require microscopic food, such as infusoria. After a week, Artemia nauplii or specialized powdered foods for juvenile aquarium fish can be introduced into their diet. It is important to note that feeding Rainbowfish fry in a community tank is significantly more difficult than in a separate spawning tank.
Health problems usually arise only as a result of injuries or keeping in unsuitable conditions, which leads to a weakening of the immune system and, as a rule, provokes the development of various diseases. At the first signs of illness, the primary task is to check the water parameters for excesses or dangerous concentrations of toxic substances (nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, etc.). After bringing all indicators back to normal, treatment can begin.
When purchasing, choose active and lively individuals; avoid fish with signs of fin damage, ulcers, or unnatural film on their scales. It is important to consider that young individuals with dull coloration often arrive at retail outlets, and their full coloration only develops as they mature and with proper nutrition. Since these fish tend to be timid, they may appear stressed in the store, so it's worth observing them for a few minutes to ensure there are no signs of disease.

An adult reaches 12 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.
The recommended volume is 100 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.
