Appearance
Height 25–40 cm, plant width 25–40 cm. Small specimens are told apart from var. nana by their longer leaf stalks. Unlike var. nana, the horizontal stem tends to grow upward rather than creep along the substrate.
Keeping
Very tolerant of poor conditions: it grows in dim light and without CO₂; in bright light with CO₂ added it grows faster and the leaves get bigger. Hardness and pH do not matter. Strong flow is beneficial, and in bright light it helps against pinpoint algae; it is sometimes stated that a high phosphate level (around 2 mg/l) also holds back pinpoint algae and encourages flowering. Growth is slow, but among the anubias it is one of the fastest. Light from dim to bright, CO₂ 5–40 mg/l, temperature 22–26 °C.
Placement
The midground and background of very large tanks; it looks good next to mosses and fine-leaved stem plants, and its leathery leaves suit cichlid tanks. Tie it to hardscape or plant it in the substrate — do not bury the horizontal stem, or it will rot. In a paludarium it looks good partly above water. Propagated by dividing the horizontal stem, preferably at points with side shoots.
