Care and keeping

Appearance

Reddish, brown, slightly textured leaves. In the wild it grows only in the Mi Oya river of Sri Lanka, in very warm water — not the most ordinary form of wendtii. One of the largest in the wendtii group: height 25–35 cm, width 15–30 cm.

Keeping

Keeping is easy. A rich substrate speeds up growth. Light shapes the plant: under bright light the leaves lie out horizontally, under dim light they grow upward. CO₂ is not needed. Unlike other forms of the species it is not prone to leaf rot. Above water it grows readily given a rich substrate and high humidity, and quickly switches from the underwater form to the land form.

Placement

Midground, background in small tanks; foreground in a group.

Fish and this plant

Matching water does not mean the fish will leave the plant alone.
