Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset' ('Rosanervig')

Hygrophila polysperma

A variety of:Dwarf Hygrophila

A nursery-bred cultivar of the dwarf hygrophila (Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset', 'Rosanervig'): the leaves are often white-veined — not from a nutrient shortage but, as a rule, from a virus that poses no danger to the rest of the aquarium.

Care and keeping

Appearance

Its hallmark is the often white leaf veins. The leaves are about 4 cm — suited to aquariums of almost any size.

Keeping

One of the easiest reddish stem plants: it grows under almost any conditions — 18–28 °C, pH 5–8, water from soft to hard. Plenty of light and CO₂ are not required, but they are exactly what brings out the reddish colour; without iron in the water the plant loses its colour, down to white. In strong light, like many fast-growing stem plants, it tends to grow sideways along the substrate, taking up space before turning upward again — dense planting or raising phosphate helps. Light medium to strong, CO₂ 5–40 mg/l.

Placement

Midground and background, a colour accent.

Fish and this plant

Matching water does not mean the fish will leave the plant alone.
